Listen to “Praying As Jesus Taught, Pt. 4”

Matthew 6:5-13

Prayer is intended for us to get on God’s page, not to get God on ours. Jesus teaches us to pray for His Kingdom to come. The Kingdom has come in part with Christ, His death and resurrection, His redeeming of sinners worldwide, and His reign in their hearts and His church. We are to pray for His Kingdom to come in continuing to redeem sinners and reign in our hearts. The Kingdom will come in its fullness with the second coming of Jesus when He sets up His eternal Kingdom forever, and we are to pray for that to happen as well. In heaven, God’s will is perfectly accomplished through joyful obedience always. Our prayer also should be for that to happen here on earth and through our lives.

Questions to Consider
1. How is your story of being saved like a King (Jesus) conquering enemy territory and bringing it to submission to His Kingdom? Why is that a glorious privilege for you?
2. How is Jesus’ Kingdom unlike worldly kingdoms? How is it both present and future?
3. How can we tell if we are praying prayers according to His will or our own will? What does it mean to pray for “His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven?”
4. How can we avoid resentment in praying for God’s will, and instead pray for it with a heart of joy that truly desires it?

Action Steps for This Week
1. Remind yourself everyday this week how God personally saved you into His Kingdom (Colossians 1:13). Thank Him for that.
2. Using a good commentary, study the Kingdom parables that Jesus teaches about in Matthew 13.
3. As a part of your regular prayer, pray for God to reign in your heart and the hearts of His worldwide church. Pray for His Kingdom to grow. Pray for Jesus to return and set up His eternal Kingdom.
4. Pray for God’s will to be accomplished with joyful, consistent obedience through your life and the lives of His worldwide church. Let your personal prayer requests be defined by this.
